Generally speaking, "buildings insurance" falls into one of two categories, either domestic or commercial.

Certain "buildings" however may require very specific, or "non standard" policies, for example grade one "listed" buildings, buildings with thatched roofs, buildings with moats etc.

Domestic Buildings Insurance Cover

Generally this type of cover will apply to the house and garage, and all domestic outbuildings, but excluding any buildings used for business or commerce.

Cover will normally be calculated on the cost of a total re-build of the property, and, or the purchase price.

The re-build cost, as calculated by the surveyor of the property. A summary of cover will normally include the following items.

• Fire, Lightning, explosion, Earthquake, Smoke, Storm or Flood
• Theft, Attempted theft, Malicious Damage, Accidental Damage
• Riot, Civil commotion, Strikes or Labour disturbances
• Leakage of oil from any fixed heating installation
• Subsidence, Landslip, Heave, Impact, Escape of water
• Breakage or collapse of Aerials, Aerial fittings and Masts
• Cost of alternative accommodation or loss of rent if the insured premises are uninhabitable after an insured event
• Property Owners Liability (including liability under the Defective Premises Act of 1972)

It is well worth noting however that in certain areas of the country liable to regular flooding, insurance policies may not cover this eventuality.
