In general home contents insurance will cover everything within your home, and within the boundaries of your property, usually on a "new for old" basis.

Typically cover will include as "standard" such things as;

• All household goods and personal belongings
• Contents temporarily removed from the home
• Accidental damage
• Contents of outbuildings
• Replacement of locks
• Contents of freezers
• Loss of heating fuel, and metered water
• Alternative accommodation

Other items, such as pedal cycles, computer equipment, clerical equipment, tools of the trade etc, may or may not be covered. Therefore cover should be arranged, as required.

Valuable items such as works of art, collections, jewellery etc should be insured for a specified sum with the insurers, within the framework of the policy, or as a separate policy.

Home contents insurance is normally offered with very fixed "upper limits" regarding claim amounts. Typical limits for standard cover are;

• Up to £500 for replacement of locks and or keys
• £50,000 for household goods, and personal belongings
• £5,000 for "out of home" items
• Freezer contents, £400

Amounts may vary, but all limits are specified in the policy cover, however all upper limits may be increased if required, and with the agreement of the insurers.
