Whether a holiday home has been bought for pleasure, or profit, or as a place to retire to, adequate insurance cover is an essential part of responsible ownership.

Holiday homes insurance should not differ greatly from the type of cover offered as standard home insurance for a "principal dwelling".

Total re-build costs for the building, and replacement "new for old" for the contents will be covered, and all of the normal risks, as per any standard home insurance policy.

Depending on the geographical location of the property, particularly if it is located outside the UK, certain "local" requirements may have to be taken into consideration.

These local requirements are very important if the property is to be the subject of rental agreements, even if these are between friends or family.

Third party liability is an important consideration with regard to holiday homes that are rented for profit for part of the year, and this would normally become part of a "commercial" based policy of cover.

Extra, or non- standard, cover may have to be arranged where the property is unoccupied for a large part of the year, and where a greater risk of burst pipes etc may be a significant factor.

Any particularly valuable items, such as works of art, jewellery etc left in the property would of course be subject to very specific terms and conditions, as largely unoccupied property is at a greater risk of crime.

Regarding holiday homes "abroad" too strong an emphasis cannot be placed upon the necessity to comply with the local regulations, this insures that the cover in force on the property is compliant, and will cover all requirements.
